Rear Admiral is Brian McGonagle, the Barstool Sports hockey blogger known for co-founding the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast with Ryan Whitney in 2016. Rear Admiral, or RA, is his Barstool nickname, not a Navy rank. On July 9, 2024 he stepped away from the show for the summer, in a Barstool post that pointed to a run of playoff travel and the end of his marriage. In April 2026 The Big Lead described him as on an indefinite break, but as of November 2026 Barstool’s show page still lists him with Whitney, Paul Bissonnette, Keith Yandle and producer Mike Grinnell, and the October 8, 2026 episode ran a segment called RA’s World. The show is one of the flagship podcasts of Barstool Sports.

Why is Rear Admiral not on Spittin’ Chiclets? Is he still on the show?

As of November 2026, Rear Admiral is still part of Spittin’ Chiclets on paper and has appeared on it this fall, but he has not been a regular on the main show since 2024. He stepped away on July 9, 2024, when Whitney said on the show that “RA’s going to take a little bit of a break from the show for the summer,” per Awful Announcing. In his own Barstool post that day he wrote, “I’ll see you in September.” On April 17, 2026, The Big Lead wrote that Whitney now shares the show with Bissonnette and Yandle, “with McGonagle on an indefinite break from the show.” Since then, Barstool’s show page has kept him in the host list, and the October 8, 2026 episode, taped in Boston for the start of the Chiclets Cup, included a segment called RA’s World, in which Terry Ryan Jr. “joins the Rear.” Neither he nor the show has announced that he left, in anything we could source, and we could not source how often he has been on since 2024.

What happened to Rear Admiral from Spittin’ Chiclets and Barstool?

Rear Admiral took a break from Spittin’ Chiclets in July 2024 for reasons he laid out himself. In a Barstool post of July 9, 2024, he described covering the Stanley Cup Final and the NHL Draft, “13 flights in 20 days,” and said it was probably too much for the state he was in. He wrote that he and his wife had agreed that January to part ways after almost 23 years together, and that it hit him harder than he expected; the post also covers other personal matters we do not cover. On the show, Bissonnette said RA needed time to address “some of his personal stuff,” and Whitney noted that he had never really had a break, per Awful Announcing. On November 18, 2024 he talked about why he stepped back with Terry Ryan on Tales with TR, a Hockey Podcast Network show.

Why was Rear Admiral fired? Did Barstool fire him?

We found no report in an accepted outlet that Rear Admiral was fired from Barstool or from Spittin’ Chiclets. What is public: the show described his July 2024 absence as a break, per Awful Announcing, and as of November 2026 Barstool’s show page still lists him as a host.

What happened with Rear Admiral and the Panthers at the Stanley Cup celebration?

Rear Admiral was turned away by Florida Panthers figures on camera after the Panthers won the 2024 Stanley Cup in Game 7, per Awful Announcing on June 26, 2024. He had rooted openly for the Oilers through the series, and when he tried to join the celebration, Panthers executive Shawn Thornton refused his handshake and former NHL player Keith Tkachuk told him off, both with profanity. Barstool posted the clips and called it “RA with a brilliant psychological experiment.” He was not quoted in the report. Two weeks later he started his break from the show.

Why is he called Rear Admiral? Is this a Navy rear admiral?

Rear Admiral is Brian McGonagle’s Barstool nickname, and this entry is about the Spittin’ Chiclets co-founder, not a Navy officer; rear admiral is also a flag rank in the U.S. Navy, which is why naval officers show up in searches for the name. He has not explained where the nickname came from, in anything we could source. The show’s podcast feed calls him “Barstool Sports writer Rear Admiral,” and episode notes shorten it to RA or “the Rear.”

What is Rear Admiral’s real name? How old is he?

Rear Admiral’s real name is Brian McGonagle, as printed by Awful Announcing in 2024 and The Big Lead in 2026. He has not published a birthdate in a source we use for ages, so we do not list one.

Is Rear Admiral married? Did he get divorced?

Rear Admiral wrote on July 9, 2024 that he and his wife had agreed that January to part ways after almost 23 years together, in his own Barstool post. He did not name her, and neither do we.

Where is Rear Admiral from?

Rear Admiral is from Boston, Massachusetts: a 2022 NEHJ Rinkwise episode about him says he was born and raised in the city and loves hockey and the Bruins. Spittin’ Chiclets kicked off its 2026 Chiclets Cup in Boston, per the October 8, 2026 episode.

What is Rear Admiral’s net worth?

Rear Admiral does not publish a number and neither do we.

What about Rear Admiral’s health, drinking or family?

Not something we cover.

Who represents Rear Admiral?

As of November 2026, no agent or manager is named publicly for Rear Admiral; his work runs through Barstool Sports, which produces Spittin’ Chiclets, per its show page. Ames Create does not represent him; we cover him because people keep asking why the co-founder of Spittin’ Chiclets went quiet, and most of the answer is in his own words. If that changes, this entry will say so.

Our read

Ames Create does not work with Rear Admiral. This is our view, from a team that works on creator brands for a living.

The format. Spittin’ Chiclets is a hockey podcast run mostly by former NHL players, and RA was the fan in the room: the Barstool blogger and Bruins diehard who started it with Whitney and brought the ribbing from the stands. His bits work on location, at Stanley Cup Finals and drafts, and now in his own segment, RA’s World.

Why it travels. His on-site moments travel because things happen to him on camera. The June 2024 Panthers celebration clips spread because team figures turned on him in the middle of it. His July 2024 post did the same in a quieter way: a co-founder explaining his own absence in plain words was covered by Awful Announcing the same day.

Brand fit. As a stand-alone partner, nobody right now: his role on the main show has been unclear since 2024, and his reach runs through Spittin’ Chiclets and Barstool rather than any channel of his own. A brand that wants him should go through the show, where the sponsor reads already sit.
