Coby Cotton

Why did Coby Cotton go to space? Did he go to space?

Coby Cotton went to space because MoonDAO, a group working to decentralize access to space, sponsored a seat on Blue Origin’s NS-22 flight and he won it. Per SlashGear, MoonDAO members narrowly picked Dude Perfect in a vote, the group then chose its flyer with a series of model rocket contests, and Coby won the third. Spaceflight Now reported that he won with the highest-flying rocket. Blue Origin announced in July 2022 that “MoonDAO members voted to have Coby represent them on this flight.” He flew on August 4, 2022 from Blue Origin’s site in West Texas with five other passengers, and Space.com reported that he did not pay for the ride. Spaceflight Now added that Quartz had reported MoonDAO paid about $2.5 million for two seats. We found no interview in which Coby explained his reasons in his own words.

The whole flight lasted about 10 minutes, and the capsule landed under parachutes in West Texas. After the landing, Dude Perfect posted “COBY IS OFFICIALLY AN ASTRONAUT!”, as quoted by NBC DFW. It was a suborbital tourist flight, not a NASA mission, and he is not a professional astronaut.
