Questions people ask
Who is Mike Israetel?
Mike Israetel, often called Dr. Mike, is a sport physiologist and co-founder of RP Strength (Renaissance Periodization), a company that sells training and diet coaching apps and posts free fitness education on YouTube. He holds a PhD in sport physiology from East Tennessee State University, per Famous Birthdays, and taught exercise and sport science at Temple University, where his courses included sports nutrition and nutrition and behavior, per his BarBend expert bio. He is also a competitive bodybuilder and a Jiu Jitsu black belt, per his publisher’s author page.
Why did Mike Israetel stop being a professor? Why is he a former professor?
His company got too big to do both, by his own account. The notes for his February 9, 2025 episode of The Drive (#335) with Peter Attia say that during his years at Temple University it became clear he was more productive not teaching, because of the workload at RP, so he stepped away. He later returned to teach in Brad Schoenfeld’s master’s program at Lehman College, then left that role too, shortly before the February 2025 episode, to work in private industry full time. The episode notes do not give dates for either exit.
What happened to Mike Israetel?
Nothing dramatic on the record. Since 2023 he has widened from training into talking about philosophy and artificial intelligence on a personal YouTube channel, which Social Blade shows was created on March 24, 2023 and has about 187,000 subscribers as of October 2026. On June 23, 2026 Grand Central Publishing released his book The Aesthetic Revolution, per Indigo’s listing. He is still with RP: his publisher’s author page lists him as co-founder and chief content officer of RP Strength, and he remains the main host on the Renaissance Periodization channel.
Why is Mike Israetel controversial? Is he in trouble?
As of October 2026 we found no report in major or trade press of a legal case, a suspension or a lost position. Online debate about him that major or trade press has not reported is not something we repeat.
Mike Israetel and Jeff Nippard: have they worked together?
Yes, professionally. In a video shared on November 18, 2024, Israetel led fellow fitness YouTuber Jeff Nippard through an arm workout he designed, and Nippard rated it 10 out of 10 at the end, per Fitness Volt. We found no reported falling out between them in major or trade press.
Does Mike Israetel have a book?
Yes. The Aesthetic Revolution: Embracing Vanity and the Future of Fitness to Unlock Your Healthiest Self came out from Grand Central Publishing on June 23, 2026, per Indigo’s listing. The publisher frames it as an argument that wanting to look good is a legitimate reason to train. His author page also notes he has written several earlier diet and training books.
How old is Mike Israetel? When is his birthday?
He is 42. He was born on May 30, 1984, per Famous Birthdays.
What is Mike Israetel’s real name?
Michael Israetel. Mike is the short form he uses on screen, and his Instagram profile carries the full first name. The “Dr.” in Dr. Mike refers to his PhD in sport physiology, not a medical degree.
Where is Mike Israetel from?
He was born in Moscow, Russia and grew up in Oak Park, Michigan, per Generation Iron in March 2025.
Where can I watch Mike Israetel?
Training videos on the Renaissance Periodization YouTube channel; philosophy, AI and longer talks on his personal YouTube channel; short clips on Instagram @drmikeisraetel and TikTok @drmikeisraetel. His long interview with Peter Attia is episode #335 of The Drive.
What about Mike Israetel’s personal life, health or appearance?
Not something we cover.
What is Mike Israetel’s net worth?
He does not publish a number and neither do we.
Who represents Mike Israetel?
His work runs through RP Strength, the company he co-founded, and we did not find a talent agency or manager named on his channels or in trade press. Ames Create does not represent him; we cover him because people keep asking why a professor with a PhD left teaching, and he has answered that on the record. If that changes, this entry will say so.
Our read
Ames Create does not work with Mike Israetel. This is our view, from a team that works on creator brands for a living.
The format. A scientist explaining training in plain language, with deadpan jokes and blunt ratings of exercises, routines and other people’s form. The lab coat credentials and the comic delivery do the same job: they make a dry topic like training volume feel like a show.
Why it travels. Ratings and reactions are built to be clipped, and a strong opinion from someone with a PhD gets stitched, shared and argued over. Collaborations with other big fitness channels, like his November 2024 arm workout with Jeff Nippard, move the audience back and forth between channels.
Brand fit. Training apps, gym equipment and nutrition brands that can live with a science-first voice that will question their claims on camera. Since 2023 he also talks about philosophy and AI on his personal channel, so a brand should watch that channel before signing, and expect him to keep saying what he thinks.
