Golf Sidekick
Golf YouTuber who goes by Matt, films himself playing real rounds in Thailand with one camera, and teaches everyday golfers course management and the mental game instead of swing tips.

Golf Sidekick is the YouTube name of a golfer who goes by Matt, grew up in South Africa and has built his channel from Thailand. He told MyGolfSpy he sold everything and arrived in Thailand with about $8,000, started a golf guide website, and began filming videos to promote it. The channel, open since November 2017, now has about 424,000 subscribers and more than 105 million views, built on what he calls the Way of the Playa, a simplified approach that puts course management and the mental game ahead of swing mechanics. He still posts several times a month as of October 2026, and also runs golfsidekick.com and his own apparel line, Waddaplaya Golf.

Questions people ask
Who is Golf Sidekick?
Golf Sidekick is a golf YouTuber who goes by Matt. His channel’s About page sums it up as everyday golfers showing everyday golfers how they play, with “not too much talking just golf shots and thought processes.” He films full rounds and course strategy videos, mostly in Thailand, and argues that most amateurs lose shots to bad decisions rather than bad swings; he told MyGolfSpy that swing tips “are opium for the masses.” His site says he has played for about 25 years on four continents and founded both Golf Sidekick and the apparel line Waddaplaya Golf.
What happened to Matt from Golf Sidekick?
As of October 2026, nothing has been reported to have happened to Matt from Golf Sidekick. As of October 23, 2026 the channel is active, with about 726 videos, and its newest upload, Old Man Golf on a Tight Course, went up on October 22, 2026. We found no report in major or trade golf press of a break or a dispute.
Why does Golf Sidekick live in Thailand? Where is he based?
Golf Sidekick moved to Thailand to start over. In his own words to MyGolfSpy: “I left South Africa as soon as possible,” and he “sold everything” and came to Thailand with about $8,000. Before that, the profile says, he trained as a pilot until a burst eardrum ended it and played poker for a living. In Thailand he started golfsidekick.com as a site of written guides (his first affiliate check, he told MyGolfSpy, was $7), then filmed videos to promote it until the channel became the main job. He has written about playing golf in Thailand since 2017.
Why does Golf Sidekick paint his face?
Golf Sidekick has not explained why he paints his face in any interview or post we could source, so we will not guess. What is public: he keeps the person behind the channel low-key on purpose. His site calls him “the biggest enigma in golf” and asks whether he is “real or a figment of your imagination,” and he runs a lean operation, “one camera, me and an editor,” as he told MyGolfSpy. If he explains the look on the record, this entry will add it.
Where is Golf Sidekick from? Is he South African or Lithuanian?
Golf Sidekick grew up in South Africa. He told MyGolfSpy about learning the game with no coaching and skipping lectures at university in Johannesburg to play 6 a.m. rounds with a league of about 50 older golfers, before leaving South Africa for Thailand. The Lithuanian part is a running joke on his own site: his author page calls him “the number one Lithuanian golf Youtuber in the world.”
Is Golf Sidekick sponsored by Takomo?
Golf Sidekick plays Takomo clubs and has a commercial link to the brand, but neither side calls it a sponsorship. Takomo’s Golf Sidekick page lists him as an influencer playing its 301 CB irons and Skyforger 002 wedges and quotes him saying his set has held up for four years. On his site, the Takomo links in his 301 irons review carry an affiliate tag. He has also filmed I wanted to replace my Takomo fairway woods because of youtube. Whether Takomo pays him beyond affiliate links has not been published.
What is Golf Sidekick’s handicap? Is he actually good?
Golf Sidekick’s own author page says he has been roughly a scratch to 5 handicap for more than 15 years and has taken lessons from coaches including Michele Low, Eric Chong and Graeme Whale. Takomo’s profile lists his best round as 67 and one hole-in-one. His point on the channel is less about how good he is and more about how a mid-handicapper can score better with the swing they already have.
Is there any Golf Sidekick drama or controversy?
We found no Golf Sidekick drama or controversy covered in major or trade golf press as of October 2026. The closest thing to a debate is his own position: he argues against swing-tip content in a YouTube golf world built on it.
How old is Golf Sidekick? What is his real name?
Golf Sidekick is 50, born October 16, 1976, per Famous Birthdays. He goes by Matt on his channel and site. The surnames printed about him do not agree with one another, and his own author page uses a joke one, so we leave it at Matt until he settles it himself.
Where can I watch Golf Sidekick?
Golf Sidekick’s full rounds, strategy breakdowns and gear videos are on YouTube @GolfSidekick, which posts several times a month as of October 2026; recent uploads include breakdowns of other creators’ games, like Why Bob Does Sports Can’t Break 80 (see our Bob Does Sports entry). Shorter clips are on Instagram @golfsidekick, and written guides and reviews are on golfsidekick.com.
What is Golf Sidekick’s net worth?
Golf Sidekick does not publish a net worth number, and neither do we.
What about Golf Sidekick’s wife or personal life?
Not something we cover.
Who represents Golf Sidekick?
As of October 2026, no outside agency or manager is named for Golf Sidekick: his YouTube About page lists a Golf Sidekick email for collabs and partnerships, and his site names an in-house business development contact. Ames Create does not represent him; we cover him because people keep asking who the man behind one of golf’s biggest instruction channels is, and the answer on the record is short. If that changes, this entry will say so.
Our read
Ames Create does not work with Golf Sidekick. This is our view, from a team that works on creator brands for a living.
The format. One golfer, one camera, a real round, and the thinking out loud: where to aim, which club to leave in the bag, why the safe shot is the smart one. The persona does the rest, a mystery man with running jokes and his own vocabulary of playas and the Way of the Playa, so the advice lands as a voice rather than a lesson.
Why it travels. Course management is the one tip every amateur can use the same day without changing their swing, and titles like breaking 90 or why a 1 handicap looks different from a 10 speak to the biggest group of golfers there is. Breakdowns of other creators’ rounds pull in their audiences too, which helps a channel with about 424,000 subscribers reach well past its own base.
Brand fit. Value equipment, rangefinders, training aids and golf travel, especially Southeast Asian courses. His audience trusts him because he sells against hype, so a brand has to survive his honest review; Takomo is the working example. Premium launch campaigns that need a scripted read are a poorer fit, and he already has his own apparel line in Waddaplaya.
