Find your outlier videos, and what their titles share
What already works on your channel, in plain words, and what to do with it. This is what comes back when you type a handle.
01
Your normal, and what beat it
The median views of your recent videos, and every one that at least doubled it, with how many times over.
02
Your outliers, side by side
The videos that broke out, ranked by how far they beat your normal, with the ones that fell under it for contrast.
03
What their titles have in common
What your winners share that the rest do not: how the title opens, the topic, the format, the length.
04
Title openers built from your own hits
Five openers in the shape of your best titles, with blanks for your next idea, and three things to test. Yours, not a template.
How it works
Type a channel handle
The @handle on the channel page. Pick long videos or Shorts.
We read the videos
The recent videos: titles, views, length and dates.
You get the audit
Your normal, your outliers, what their titles share, and what to try next.
Built by our team
What makes it worth using
It measures the channel against itself
A hit is a video that beat the channel’s own normal. That is why it works at 300 views a video or 3 million.
Words, not a grade
No score out of 100 and no letter grade. You get what worked, in plain words, and what to test next.
Nothing to install or sign in to
No browser extension, no Google sign-in, no account. A few audits a day each keeps it free for everyone.
Honest about what it can see
It reads titles and numbers. It has not watched your videos or seen your thumbnails, and it says so.
How to audit a YouTube channel
You can do this by hand from the channel page. It is the same method the tool uses.
Open your Videos tab and write down the views on your last 12 videos. Skip anything under 48 hours old, because its views are still climbing. Keep Shorts and long videos in separate lists. They behave differently.
Find the median, not the average. Line the numbers up from lowest to highest and take the one in the middle. That is your normal. One video that took off will pull an average far above what you usually get.
Mark every video at 2x your normal or more. Those are your outliers: the videos that beat what your own channel usually does.
Write down what the outlier titles share. How they open, whether there is a number or a question, the topic, the length. Then look at your lowest videos and ask whether their titles do the opposite.
Or type the handle at the top of this page. The audit does all four steps from public numbers, then writes up the pattern and gives you title openers built from your own hits.
What is an outlier video, and what is a good outlier score?
An outlier is a video that did far more views than the channel usually gets. The score is simple: the video’s views divided by the channel’s normal. A video at 60,000 views on a channel whose normal is 20,000 is a 3x.
Tools disagree on what “normal” means. Some use the channel’s average. We use the median of the last 12 videos, leaving out anything under 48 hours old, because one viral video drags an average up and makes every later video look weak.
On that scale, 2x or more is a hit. There is no magic number above that. What matters is whether several outliers share something, because that is the part you can repeat.
What a YouTube channel audit reads
Long videos. The channel’s recent public videos, usually 30 or more: the title, the view count, the length and the publish date. On YouTube the title carries the promise, so this is where the audit has the most to work with.
Shorts. Read as their own list when you pick Shorts. YouTube now allows Shorts up to 3 minutes, so a channel can have plenty of both. Mixing them would give a normal that describes neither.
A hit is any video at 2x the normal or more. A miss is one at 0.5x or under. The audit shows both, because the contrast is where the pattern is.
YouTube Analytics and this audit: use both
They answer different questions, and the two together are better than either alone.
YouTube Analytics shows things only the channel owner can see. For each video, YouTube lists impressions, impressions click-through rate, unique viewers on the Reach tab, and watch time and average view duration on the Engagement tab.
This audit shows what Analytics does not put in one place: your videos lined up against your own normal, and what the titles of the ones that broke out have in common, in words.
A good way to use both: run the audit, take the outliers it finds, then open each one in Analytics. Click-through rate tells you whether the title and thumbnail pulled people in. Average view duration tells you whether the video kept them.
Why are my YouTube views going down?
Start by asking whether they are down against your own normal. An ordinary video can feel like a failure right after one that took off, and it may be exactly your normal. The audit puts a number on that.
If your recent videos really are under your normal, look at the misses next to the hits. Sometimes the difference is visible in the title: the hits promise an outcome, and the misses label the video.
What the audit cannot do is see inside YouTube. It cannot see your impressions or your click-through rate, and we would rather say that than guess.
What this channel audit does not check
Many tools called a channel audit give you a score or a grade. This one answers a narrower question, and it is worth being plain about what it leaves out.
- SEO, tags and descriptions. There is no SEO score here. It does not read tags, descriptions or keywords.
- Thumbnails. It reads titles, not images. The thumbnail matters a great deal on YouTube, and that part is yours to judge.
- Click-through rate and retention. Impressions, click-through rate and average view duration live in your own YouTube Analytics, behind your sign-in. We never ask for it.
- Monetization or earnings. It does not check whether a channel is monetized or estimate what it earns.
- Subscriber growth. The audit is built on views per video. It does not track subscribers.
- The videos themselves. It has not watched them. It reads the title you published and the numbers the video earned.
On TikTok or Instagram too? The full Page Audit reads TikTok and Instagram Reels the same way. And when a sponsor asks what you charge, the YouTube Sponsorship Rate Calculator prices an integration or a dedicated video from the same normal.
Questions people ask
How do I audit a YouTube channel?
Compare the channel’s recent videos with its own median, not with its subscriber count or another channel. List the views on the last 12 videos, find the median, mark everything at 2x or more, and write down what those titles share. Or type the handle at the top of this page and the audit does it for you.
Is there a free YouTube channel audit tool?
This one is free, with no account, no sign-in and no browser extension. Type a handle, pick long videos or Shorts, and it shows your normal, your outliers and what their titles have in common. Each person gets a few audits a day.
What is an outlier video on YouTube?
A video that did far more views than the channel usually gets. We count anything at 2x the channel’s normal or more. Outliers matter because they show what the audience, and YouTube, wanted more of. One could be luck. Three with something in common is a pattern.
What is a good outlier score?
An outlier score is a video’s views divided by what the channel usually gets. Tools differ on “usually”: some use the average, and we use the median of the last 12 videos, because one viral video does not move it much. On our scale, 2x or more is a hit, and the higher it is, the more that video is worth studying.
Is this a YouTube outlier finder?
Yes, for one channel at a time. It finds the outliers among a channel’s recent videos and then goes a step further: it writes up what their titles have in common and gives you title openers in the same shape. It does not search across YouTube for outliers in a niche.
Why are my YouTube views going down?
First check whether they are down against your own normal. If your recent videos sit near it, nothing has changed. If several are at 0.5x your normal or under, the audit lists them next to your hits so you can see what is different in the titles, the topics and the length. It cannot see reasons that live inside YouTube.
Why do some of my YouTube videos get more views than others?
Usually the answer is in your own videos. When you line the hits up next to the rest, the titles tend to share something: a number, a question, a topic, a format. The audit puts them side by side and names what it can see. Sometimes the hits share nothing visible in the titles and numbers, and it says that too.
Does it audit Shorts?
Yes, as their own list. Pick Shorts before you run it and the audit reads your recent Shorts only. Long videos and Shorts are not mixed, because a normal built from both would describe neither.
Does it check SEO, tags or thumbnails?
No. There is no SEO score, and it does not read tags, descriptions or thumbnails. It reads titles, view counts, lengths and dates, and tells you what the titles of your best videos have in common.
Can I audit another channel?
Yes. It reads public videos, so it runs on any public channel, and looking at what the outliers on a channel in your niche share is a fair use of it. The hooks and the things to test are written for the person who makes the videos.
Do I need to sign in with Google or connect my channel?
No. There is nothing to connect and nothing to install. It reads what is already public on the channel.
How many videos does it read?
The most recent public videos, usually 30 or more. Your normal comes from the last 12 of them, leaving out anything under 48 hours old.
Is the YouTube channel audit free?
Yes, with no account and no email. Each person gets a few audits a day, which keeps it free for everyone. If you want to know what your normal is worth to a sponsor, the YouTube Sponsorship Rate Calculator works that out from the same numbers.
