Why did Francis Ellis get fired from Barstool? Was he cancelled?
Barstool fired Francis Ellis on Friday, June 28, 2019, over a blog post he published that morning about a missing University of Utah student. The post made jokes about reports on her personal life and was deleted soon after; shortly after it went up, Salt Lake City police announced she had been found dead, per The Washington Post, via The Salt Lake Tribune. Dave Portnoy announced the firing in a video that night, calling the post “just an absolutely insane move” and “a ridiculous lack in judgment,” while adding that he knew Francis meant well. Francis apologized on Twitter, saying he had carelessly assumed she was fine and calling the post “a horrific mistake,” per the same report. That firing is the “cancelled” story people search; the next answer covers how he came back.

Our read
Ames Create does not work with Francis Ellis. This is our view, from a team that works on creator brands for a living.
The format. A three-way hang podcast where he plays the older, drier voice between a battle rapper and a younger comic, plus stand-up built on dark jokes and satirical keyboard songs. Twice a week on Son of a Boy Dad gives the audience a steady read on him that a single viral clip never could.
Why it travels. His reach mostly rides on shows bigger than him: Barstool’s podcast network, a Netflix series, and a creator golf event where $1 million was on the line. The Internet Invitational win put him in front of golf audiences that had never heard the podcast.
Brand fit. Barstool’s sponsor lane already fits: the show carries reads for spirits, meal kits, ticketing and sportsbooks. The 2019 firing and the 2022 hot mic are well documented, so brands that avoid edgy comedy will pass, and golf brands that saw the Invitational are the most natural new door.
